To Kris (at the table ignoring me)
I just heard the fairies from Kalamzoo
tap on the window. They were asking for you.
I rose from my lonely seat on the floor
and asked them, “Please, fly round to the door.”
I invited them in, and as a good host should do,
inquired of their health, but they asked only for you.
I pointed you out, writing there at the table,
and told them politely that if they were able
to get your attention they were welcome indeed
since you were too busy…too busy for me.
Their gossamer wings brushed my cheek like a kiss
and the Kalamazoo fairies said, “Tell the young Miss
that there are lovers by word and lovers by deed,
but selfish hearts will always be lovers in need!”
Then in a flitter of action amid a flutter of wings
the fairies circled round in a magical ring
singing softly together, “One never knows
when loves morning blush will fall from the rose.”
I bid them adieu and watched them depart
and at the table in your place lay a porcelain heart.
