YESTERDAY

JP. 1948 (United Kingdom)

YESTERDAY

Yesterday’s words are falling away
Yesterday’s words mean nothing today
Yesterday’s words have no use anyway
To someone who wants to be no one today

Yesterday’s sentiment cannot be replayed
Today for the straggler that overstayed
It meaning is caught but stands now delayed
No, yesterday’s word has no dues to be paid

Yesterday’s sight of things yet to come
Disregarded by most but read by just some
Are all that is left when all’s said and done
The remains of a day when life weighed a ton

If there’s a new day can I write some more?
Of loving and hatred and how I felt sure
Will it mean anything if I write of life’s gore?
Or will it be ignored as your eyes close the door?

But yesterday’s words now have fell to the ground
Hitting the earth with no contact sound
And if I try hard I can see where they lie dead
In an unwritten style that cannot be read

So today I might try to set more inverse
Regarding these thoughts encompassed in verse
In a titanic struggle to try to converse
As I read what I write in this script to rehearse

Yet yesterday’s words are no good for today
They cannot wrest the meaning from that I must say
I’ll leave a blank space where words should have been
And maybe you will guess what it is that I mean.
