Bats In The Attic
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
She always looks so good in dark
The night, her evening gown,
Clings, like bats in the attic
Sleepless keepers of upside down
Winged creatures hang there too Restless rustlings rattle the slats
In the silent dark of night
She thinks we all are bats
She captures the bats in the attic
As they go flutter by
Paints them festive colors
Calls them butterflies
The flutter of a thousand wings
Resounds among the attic rafters
And all their twisted chatterings
Blend and echo in her laughter
She says there are bats in the castle
Daylight sleeps, compliant later
She knows that they have come to stay
The bats, they appreciate her
She captures the bats in the attic
As they go flutter by
Paints them rainbow colors
Calls them butterflies
Somewhere over cuckoo's rainbow
Flunkies on missions flying
Dispatched to malicious mischief
Bats and monkeys on the wing
Twisters drop houses, stir the bats
Off with their heads! the Red Queen says
Up in the Belfry keeping watch
Costumed in makeup castle dress
She captures the bats in the attic
As they go flutter by
Paints them festive colors
Calls them butterflies
We're really all quite mad, you know
Rustling rattles the restless hats
Cuckoos, butterflies, monkeys too
She thinks we all are bats
She hangs with bats in the attic
Sleeps with daylight as her cover
A single solitary laugh rang out
As one flew over...
