For there is a war

Chris Donovan 1977 (usa)

Inside of me
So many people I would rather be
And I find a space, in an empty place
I have known before, But I cannot go
For there is a war. . . .
I fall deep into myself
And witness childhood carelessness
While I fight with my mirror
To remain the same
I turn inside and out again
And thus that guy, I am no more, I cannot be
For there is a war. . . .
I become what I see every day
A pearly smile, a mask of clay
Or perhaps a frown, an "all knowing stare"
A stance of defiance, my almighty air
Let them guess; let them ask what I am for
They will never know
For there is a war. . . .
