Analysis of Bonsai Plants

Tiny plants grown in
glazed ceramic planters
no bigger than a bowl.
Ficus, Schefflera, even Gardenias
just like their normal counterparts
intentionally kept small
stunting their growth
to fool Mother Nature.

Their resemblance uncanny
miniaturized freaks of nature
they follow the seasonal changes
like their bigger brothers.
Trees bearing dwarf-sized fruits
equivalent to the real stuff
Their leaves proportional to
their miniaturized size.

Their small trunks and branches
allowing one to twist and bend
through flexible copper wires
into unique shapes and forms
to individual artistic penchant.
Once in a while
it is naughty and nice
to fool Mother Nature.

Alexander Lim

I am a neurologist, who writes mostly medical articles for publication. When I have time, I tend to write essays and forums, sometimes for our local newspaper in areas that interest me, some of which may be quite controversial. I love "point" and "counterpoint", having been a co-captain of my Hi-school debate team. Poetry is not my genre of choice. I do it when some subjects prompts me, but I do find solitude in it. more…
