Analysis of A Portrait of Mother

Sparkling eyes recessed,
Like the precious stones set in her ring.
Her wrinkled brow long furrowed
By three score years and ten.
The silver strands of thinning hair
Contrasting with the pure gold of her heart
She is God's great work of art.

A tower of strength, she stands tall
Amidst the crumbling uncertainties of motherhood,
Her nut-brown face soaked
With the dew of sweat and tears.
The honest words from her crimson lips
Blend harmoniously with the ruby richness of her heart,
She is God's great work of art.

Yet, throughout the years of toil
She sits unblemished,
Not a color of hers has faded.
Her brilliant mind well tinted
By the many shades of experience
Highlights the unfading beauty of her heart.
She is God's great work of art.

Barbara Cadogan

I am a Registered Nurse, and first started to write poetry when I was about 18 years old. I have written several poems on a variety of subjects, and enjoy poems that are light and filled with humor. I feel that a good poem like a painting, is able to evoke a variety of emotions, whether sad or cheerful, angry or sympathetic. My goal in life is to learn as much as I can, and to spread peace and good cheer to many. Above all, to be respectful and helpful to my fellow man. more…
