Analysis of Dear Parents

Dear parents,
I know you loved me,
I know you cared,
And although I seen you,
You were never really there.

You held me up,
But you also brought me down,
And there I was left,
Left waiting to be found.

And as I grew up,
To be a girl in her teens,
My emotions became a problem,
They could be felt but they could not be seen.

I lay awake at night,
Fearing those monsters beneath my bed,
The ones you were meant to save me from,
But there I was, left for dead.

I had to be my own warrior,
I had to learn to fight for myself,
I could see it in your eyes,
I was just another book on the shelf.

A dusty old book,
Another chapter discarded,
As the emotions started to loom,
I was left there broken hearted.

The woman I am today,
You claim to have created,
Yet when I needed you,
I just stood there and I waited.

It was me who picked up the pieces,
But to you that never mattered,
And as I sat there on my own,
I finally heard the glass shatter.

So dear parents,
I should probably thank you,
Because it was you who gave me life,
Yet it was me that saved myself,
When you slowly drew the knife.
