Analysis of Paying the Price

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

Thinking
something nice might come of this

Despite the time lost in the trenches
suffering more lost than found.

Taking a chance to pursue this choice,
hopeful my word will find voice,

be heard once more to resonate
between others of like mind and heart,

hoping to find that perfect match,
Even among my opposite,

to gain respect somehow
By something in humanity, we share,

Maybe even find common ground.
To become someone who cares

more about loving humanity
Than merely finding themselves

Someone to love
