Analysis of A Poem Of remembrance

Sitting here among the honored
On this hollowed day
We take the time to remember them
And the lives they gave

They’ve stood for freedom throughout the world
Giving all they had
Someone’s son or daughter, sister, brother
Perhaps a mom or dad

Now they lie with honor beneath Old Glory
A symbol for the free
As I sit here, I feel so honored.
That they’d give their lives for me.

So, I’ll try each day to live a life.
Worthy of the cost
Knowing freedom isn’t free.
In its name men’s lives were lost

I guess right now It’s all have.
These few heartfelt lines
That I might write here among these soldiers
Who for me gave their lives.

About this poem

I wrote this on veterans’ day of this year. A cousin and I were hanging out and eventually found ourselves at the veteran's cemetery outside of Redding, California. I sat on a bench for a while, then a few lines started coming to me. This wasn’t the easiest poem I’ve ever written but it is my honest attempt at conveying how I feel for the soldiers that lay down their lives for our freedom.

Jeff Jennings

I have been writing poetry since my sr. year in high school. I have written in other formats since third grade, when my teacher noticed that if I had the right encouragement, I might become quite good at my craft. The only problem is that I Have had cerebral palsy since birth, when I suffered from a prolapsed cord. I probably never would have become a writer if it weren’t for the advent of the computer. With my cerebral palsy My ability to write legibly is greatly impaired, as well as my spelling. It wasn’t until My Sr year that I found my love for poetry. I discovered my sr year that I had another disability known as turrets syndrome. While my Sr. year of High School was difficult with my disabilities, I was able to overcome my faults and graduate on time. I believe I also made a difference in the lives of my peers. I plan to continue writing as long as I can and am currently l trying to establish a business selling my poetry, not only written, but illustrated as well. My greatest hope in entering this contest is that it will be seen by at least one veteran and perhaps convey the gratitude that any true red-blooded American has for the sacrifice. more…
