Analysis of Eat, Pray, Love (a movie)

DougbBlair 1951 (London)

Part Two…the most satisfying
For me. A period in India.
Mystical, quiet place of
Retreat.
Richard takes her on
Smart ass that he is.
Names her Groceries.
All that food
Partying, singing in Italy.
Sticks to her.
But then a wedding
One of the eastern young girls.
All pre-arranged.
Coming back to the Centre.
Richard and Julia.
Time for him to spill. If possible.
The marriage, drinking, screwing.
Forgetting.

Then one fateful Day.
DUI. Oh he can still drive.
Tearing into family driveway.

Did not see little
Son playing with hot wheels.
Seated on asphalt.
Right in front.

No, not manslaughter
Near miss. Wife watching
From living room window.
Next sunrise…GONE.
Determinedly.

All this while Richard
Short of breath. Faltering.
Scratching jaw, unshaven.
Biting nails. Sighing and
Struggling to control.
Wiping single tear.
Monstrous lump in the throat.
Looking down to those
Cobblestones.
Best option under the circumstances.
Before departing to
Their respective rooms
Richard whispers
Must learn to forgive yourself. OK?

*Best of acting, Richard Jenkins.

About this poem

Julia Roberts, post divorce glooms, is trying to find the Pearl of great price. Meeting many places, priorities people. Richard Jenkins near top of the list. Bardem comes later. In Bali, and gently. Sea breezes and sand. Boat departure, together.
