Analysis of The Darkness

Kathleen Velner 1964 (Minnesota)

In the depths of my heart
there's a vast emptiness
darker than the midnight sky

Lost is the faintest hope
that drowned in silent tears
grieving with the last goodbye

Sadness consumes my soul
Loves hunger goes unfed
Weeping blood like pouring rain

Faded dreams drift away
wanting to be reborn
only to die drenched in pain

Darkness surrounds my life
choking my will to live
ransoming my every breath

My aching heart cries out
in emptiness it mourns
quiet longing for my death

About this poem

i wrote this poem when i was living through a deep sadness in my life. it helped me to put the sadness into words and empty myself of the grip it had on my life. this is one several poems i wrote during that period. i'm happy to say that i have found my way out of the darkness and into the light of life!
