Analysis of Could have been friends

Jadine Swart 2003 (Fisantekraal)

Your smile,
pulled me in so quickly.

The moment you spilled that liquor,
I spilled some words trying to start somewhere.
I could feel that you also wanted to speak,
but were very shy.

Now,
 I regret smiling back.
All I want,
is to be your friend.
Nothing more,
Nothing less.

I'm way to scared,
scared to give myself,
all of myself.

Please understand,
we could have been friends.

About this poem

It is about a guy who met this girl and got invested in her, but she only wanted to be friends. He really just wanted to get to know her more than a friend, but she really just wanted to be friends.
