Analysis of Youth Incarnate

Ah sweet youth, the envy of those stooped by age
Weathered rock, etched in time, written page by page
A stolen kiss on Spring’s eve, birthing anew
Memories fade, swallowed by time with little left to rue

Would I sacrifice my youth for wisdom, in a wicked devil’s deal?
With ages comes knowledge, understanding and doing less by feel
I sit astride this rocking boat swaying to and fro
Wondering, as I look on high, will I ever grow?

An insignificant worm, wriggling on the ground
Constant fear of being plucked when whooshing wings sound
Who will mourn my absence from this little hill?
Not one of my friends, all superficial shall cry a tear, nay, nil

I set my sights on attainable goals, knowing I’ll never be great
Broken and shackled, weighed down by my own self hate
A smile sits fixed upon my face, but in you I must confide
I’m screaming, dark and lonely but all is hidden inside

About this poem

I sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the things I am "supposed" to know. I wrote this after splitting with my long term partner as I felt the experience with him has aged me whilst still being a young person.
