Analysis of The endless whale

Heather Lydia Thornhill 1981 (Manchester)

I walked my walk for eternity upon a whale that I set free.
The endless whale has passed me by
The image behind my poor dear eye
For I have waited for eternity
For the endless whale to be set free
Into the spaces calling to me
Spaces of rest and endless sea
I clasp my hand to its memory
And the whale sings truth for its family
I sit in its awe as if i had met god
And look at my palm the way I once could
As the textured words on fated skin
Break my heart as they shed within
To find a land and to brush its hair
And to call it earth so to shed me bare
To shed my message of purity
From dust of earth to infinity
But all I feel is its pounding heart
Piercing through memory of a sea so dark
And when I stood my feet on earth
I felt its wealth and I spent its worth
And I died with it as it crumbled in two
For it was the only planet I grew
Far beyond imaginings
Intimate its life beings
I walked upon it evermore as particles lay down my floor
And I shrunk into the smallest thing
Until the whale stopped beckoning
And all alone in sound and hue
I shed a tear and that tear grew
Into a planet made of ice
My wintery curls rolling through
As glaciers fell and seas were drew
And then the whale reminded me
Of land so bussomed with milk of tree
So I carved a world as detailed as lace
With every soul and every face of hill
And mountain garden and shrine
A place worthy of my devine
Then added hope with life so meak
It would live a second or live a weak
Much more unique than ever known
In reflect of the turning tones set free
Upon my inner eye
Until the whale did surely sigh
Its particles drifting through my thigh
And brought me down upon my knees
To grow into the smallest tree
And continue on as a leaf so free.
