Analysis of Forbidden

How can I exist in the same world as that brightness?

When my nights and days are so dark.

There's more to me than what they see,

I’m nothing but a pretender wearing a mask.

Without it I’m nameless and faceless,

no identity at all,

to the one who matters most.

If only she knew what I felt inside,

how my knees got weak when she passes me and with just a slight glance she would make my heart melt.

How do I even begin to explain that smile and how it shines bright like the sun!

If only I was worthy enough to be in "her world" I would find a way to tell her one day,

but on the other side of the divided middle line in "our worlds" it just doesn't make sense.

Which brings me back to my original question: how can I exist in the same world as that brightness?!

About this poem

This is a poem I wrote during my senior year in high school in my creative writing class. The assignment was to take one line from True Love by Robert Penn Warren and create my own poem. I came up with the concept of a man admiring a forbidden love from afar.

Jan Quiles

Writing is my happy place as well as an escape. It helps me to express what I may not have the courage to say to others or about certain situations. I’ve been writing since I was 8 years old but not many know this about me so I hope to use this as the first step to putting myself out there. Thank you for reading and for your support ❤️ more…
