Soldier's Pain

Every morning he wakes up in a cold sweat
His face, clothing, and hair are sopping wet.
Memories of the past flashed before his sleeping mind
Horrors of flesh and bone, demons destroying mankind.
The young soldier being carried away to a quiet room
Another forty are marching out to face certain doom.
One day soon, he hopes to wake up from these,
eternal nightmares, to finally stand in a crowd again with ease.
He hopes no one notices the tears in his eyes,
or minds it when he begins to feed them lies.
The lies meant not to hurt his family or his friends,
but to mask the fears, the gaping wound that never mends.
Each new day brings new hopes and new fears,
Will he flash back today? or will he cry new tears.
His life is no longer the same now as it was then,
No favorite pass times, no craving for fleshes sin.
Poor young man who slept too deep
Now all day you'll have to fight not to weep.
Each day is a struggle to be normal, to be whole
Best we can wish for is to play a stunning roll
Some day, some way, maybe even some how
He still hopes things will be better than ever they are now.

Kevin Baugh

Was in the Army for nearly 6 years, now I'm back in school as a nursing student. Poetry has been my escape from things recently, and really has brought me back from the brink of mental anguish. Being able to put all my feelings, and some of my dreams, down on paper has really liberated me. Please read and review, it only helps me grow! more…
