Tailgate for Two

From the back of my truck
There’s a tranquil view
Perfect for a setting sun
And a tailgate for two

Watching that sun go down
Brings thoughts of years gone by
The things I did or didn’t do
And all the reasons why

Sitting here with you
Confessing secrets untold
Sharing life stories
And heartbreaks of old

Heart influences
From many tears and smiles
I’m amazed as I tally up
The years and miles

Battles of the heart
Regardless of won or lost
In time, everyone wins and loses
When you calculate the costs

 And your own treasured past
To me you entrust
Our lives not so different
Survival we know a must

In the school of life
We’re to learn from our mistakes
And some might wrongly think
A fool of them it makes

Thought you were the only one
Not quite good enough
Same as me you wonder
Just who you can trust?

Looking back over the years
And many lessons learned
Things we might have done differently
Had we known the knowledge we yearned

So quickly the hours they pass
From sunset to this starlight view
Thank you for your warm company
On this tailgate for two
