Birthday

I blow out the candles
and make a wish,
as I enter a new decade
with mixed feelings.

Too old to die young
but too young
to die today (God willing).

But I am now
officially old;
no escaping that fact.

I bought a one-way ticket
to old age, not knowing
if I'd ever get there.

I guess I've arrived.

Hope I have enough breath left
to blow out the candles
next year!

My restless dreams
at anchor ride,
but soon they'll sail again!
