Mindfulness

Roger McGough 1937 (Litherland)

Mindful of my newfound mindfulness
I awoke to the infinite possibilities shimmering
in the exquisite web of interconnectedness.

As soon as my feet touched the floor
I knew it was going to be a good day.
'Today will be a good day,' I intoned.

I went to the window, not for fresh air
but for light. I filled my lungs with pure light
and intoned: 'Today will be a good day.'

And again: 'Today will be a great day,'
And it might have been, had the Governor
not turned down my application for parole.
