The derry volunteer

Along the streets of the Bogside
He went into battle for the same
Cause as Pearse on that Easter
So grand and his blood splashed
A road side as a helicopter flew
Over the offering of another life
To free our partitioned land.
~
And in the wake of the battle some
Went to his family to inform them
Of their terrible loss and they offered
A prayer to God by his image pleading
With him to lighten their cross.
~
Then, after a few days, as a lark sweetly
Sang above the heights of Creggan
In wood he was lowered into his native
Earth, where he had lived, where he had
Loved, and now rested in glory- a young
Volunteer not far from his hearth.
