Apple Picking

As light drizzle fell we snapped branches
Of length and urged them to bring down
Apples.

Shaking tattered limbs or swiping
At single crabs
Apples dropped
(A confirmation of Newton’s theory).

Using our jackets as baskets or bags
We then gathered as many as we could
And dashed of from the wrath of
The farmer…

By the time of arrival at our homes
We had devoured many a crab
(Gathering a legacy of tummy ache)
While those left over went into
Mother’s home made jam.
Mother being led to believe
That farmer X granted
Whatever fruit seasonal winds
Had scattered- unaware of the joy
We shared shaking, groping, and grasping.
