The Rose Of Derry

(For Sile)

During an autumn October evening
As the sun went to rest I observed
A colleen whose appearance was
Of interest but my attempts at
Eye contact failed as we were
But two of a number strolling
Along a Derry city street.

Later on I saw the colleen
And her beauty so increased
My interest that I decided to
Pursue…Which was a hope
Becoming in time a God
Given wonderful blessing!

For in a local hotel, one night,
We met by being introduced
By a friend and from that
Blessed occasion a courtship
Developed which did not last
For long: for we went and married
During the following month of May
On a  bright and warm but breezy day.
And, now, we are the proud parents of
Children who are a source of  much joy
While I offer this piece in tribute to my
Wife who in the depths of my heart
Is a flower forever blooming.
