Sous un dais, à ses coins ayant quatre panaches ;
Le grand peuple en travail d'où sort la grande loi ;
Je hais qu'on la bâillonne ou qu'on la fleurdelyse ;
Tant pour voir le bon Dieu s'il est peint par Van-Dyck ;
Je n'ai ni marguillier, ni bedeau, ni syndic,
Ni custode, ni clerc, ni diacre, ni vicaire ;
Je ne garde aucun saint dans aucun reliquaire ;
Je n'ai pas de miracle en bouteille sous clé ;
Mon vêtement n'est pas de diamants bouclé ;
Je ne suis pas payé quand je fais ma prière ;
La chape d'or au cou, la mitre d'or au front ;
Je ne fais point baiser ma main aux bonnes femmes ;
Je vénère le ciel, mais sans le vendre aux âmes ;
Dans les champs, et mes bas ne sont pas violets ;
Les fautes que je fais sont des fautes sincères ;
L'hypocrisie et moi sommes deux adversaires ;
Je crois ce que je dis, je fais ce que je crois ;
Je mets près de Socrate aux fers Jésus en croix ;
Fût-il mon ennemi, si je peux, je le sauve ;
Je méprise Basile et dédaigne Scapin ;
Je donne à l'enfant pauvre un morceau de mon pain ;
Et j'ai subi vingt ans l'exil dans la tempête ;
Je recommencerai demain, si Dieu le veut ;

Victor Marie Hugo

Victor Marie Hugo was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best known French writers. In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831. Though a committed royalist when he was young, Hugo's views changed as the decades passed; he became a passionate supporter of republicanism, and his work touches upon most of the political and social issues and artistic trends of his time. He was buried in the Panthéon. more…
