Renaissance

Rene Francois Armand Prudhomme 1839 (Paris) – 1907 (Châtenay-Malabry)

Je voudrais, les prunelles closes,
Oublier, renaître, et jouir
De la nouveauté, fleur des choses,
Que l'àge fait évanouir.

Je resaluerais la lumière,
Mais je déplierais lentement
Mon âme vierge et ma paupière
Pour savourer l'étonnement ;

Et je devinerais moi-même
Les secrets que nous apprenons ;
J'irais seul aux êtres que j'aime
Et je leur donnerais des noms ;

Émerveillé des bleus abîmes
Où le vrai Dieu semble endormi,
Je cacherais mes pleurs sublimes
Dans des vers sonnant l'infini ;

Et pour toi, mon premier poème,
O mon aimée, ô ma douleur,
Je briserais d'un cri suprême
Un vers frêle comme une fleur.

Si pour nous il existe un monde
Où s'enchaînent de meilleurs jours,
Que sa face ne soit pas ronde,
Mais s'étende toujours, toujours...

Et que la beauté, désapprise
Par un continuel oubli,
Par une incessante surprise
Nous fasse un bonheur accompli.
