L'Indulgence est tendre, elle est femme.
Ceux qu'un faux pas, même expié,
Dans le monde à jamais diffame,
Lavent leur front dans sa pitié.
Humble soeur aux longues paupières,
Pour l'homme, fût-il criminel,
Tandis qu'on lui jette des pierres,
Elle garde un pleur fraternel.
S'approchant du coeur plein de fange,
De scorie épaisse et de fiel,
Pour l'assainir, elle y mélange
Cette larme, aumône du ciel ;
Et, loin d'y remuer la honte,
Comme les injures le font,
Elle attend que l'amour remonte
Et que la haine tombe au fond.
C'est alors que, de sa main douce
Élevant ce coeur épuré,
Elle l'incline sans secousse
Et lui pardonne : il a pleuré.
