Seras-tu de l'amour l'éternelle pâture ?
A quoi te sert la volonté,
Si ce n'est point, ô coeur, pour vaincre ta torture,
Et dans la paix enfin, plus fort que la nature,
T'asseoir sur le désir dompté,

Ainsi qu'un bestiaire, après la lutte, règne
Sur son tigre qui s'est rendu,
Et s'assied sur la bête, et, de son poing qui saigne
La courbant jusqu'à terre, exige qu'elle craigne
Alors même qu'elle a mordu ?

Et comme ce dompteur, seul au fond de la cage,
Ne cherche qu'en soi son appui,
Car nul dans ce péril avec lui ne s'engage,
Et nul ne sait parler le tacite langage
Que le monstre parle avec lui,

Ainsi, dans les combats que le désir te livre,
Ne compte sur personne, ô coeur !
N'attends pas, sous la dent, qu'un autre te délivre !
Tu luttes quelque part où nul ne peut te suivre,
Toujours seul, victime ou vainqueur.
