Le soir, la solitude et la neige s'entendent
Pour faire un paysage affreux de cet endroit
Blêmissant au milieu dans un demi-jour froid
Tandis que ses lointains d'obscurité se tendent.

Çà et là, des étangs dont les glaces se fendent
Avec un mauvais bruit qui suscite l'effroi ;
Là-bas, dans une terre où le vague s'accroît,
Des corbeaux qui s'en vont et d'autres qui s'attendent.

Voici qu'une vapeur voilée
Sort d'une mare dégelée
Puis d'une autre et d'une autre encor :

Lugubre hommage, en quelque sorte
Qui, lentement, vers le ciel mort
Monte de la campagne morte.
