Tandis qu’au soleil lourd la campagne d’automne
Filait inertement son rêve de stupeur,
Nous traversions la brande aride et monotone
Où le merle envahi du spleen enveloppeur
Avait un vol furtif et tremblotant de peur.
Nous longions un pacage, un taillis, une vigne ;
Puis au fond du ravin que la ronce égratigne
Apparaissait la Creuse aux abords malaisés :
Alors tu t’asseyais, et j’apprêtais ma ligne
À l’ombre des coteaux rocailleux et boisés.

Lorsque j’avais trouvé dans l'onde qui moutonne,
Près d’un rocher garni d’écume et de vapeur,
L’endroit où le goujon folâtre et se cantonne,
Je fouettais le courant de mon fil agrippeur,
Et bientôt le poisson mordait l’appât trompeur.
Toi, sous un châtaignier majestueux et digne,
Aux coincoins du canard qui nageait comme un cygne,
Rêveuse, tu croquais des sites apaisés ;
Et je venais te voir quand tu me faisais signe,
À l’ombre des coteaux rocailleux et boisés.

Par des escarpements que le lierre festonne,
Un meunier s’en allait sur son baudet grimpeur ;
Des roulements pareils à ceux d’un ciel qui tonne
S’ébauchaient ; le pivert au bec dur et frappeur
Poussait un cri pointu dans l’air plein de torpeur.
Et nous, sans redouter la vipère maligne,
Avec des mots d’amour que le regard souligne,
Ayant pour seuls témoins les lézards irisés,
Nous causions tendrement sur la mousse bénigne,
À l’ombre des coteaux rocailleux et boisés.

Ô toi qui m’as grandi par ta candeur insigne,
Partout mon souvenir te cherche et te désigne ;
Et j’évoque le temps où j’avais les baisers
De ta bouche d’enfant, fraîche et couleur de guigne,
À l’ombre des coteaux rocailleux et boisés.
