Soir de pluie

Sur l'eau d'un vitreux mat, vert bouteille foncé,
Des ronds, comme au compas, sont tracés par la pluie,
Chacun d'eux, forme frêle à l'instant même enfuie,
Étant par un semblable aussitôt remplacé.

Et puis, ce ne sont plus que des ombres de cercle,
Des fantômes de ronds toujours plus affaiblis
Sur le moutonnement, les plis et les replis
De l'eau vague où le soir met son brumeux couvercle.

Cette nuit, la rivière aura
Tout son malfaisant scélérat
De lianes-serpents, d'herbes qui vous empoignent.

On sent couver là, sur ce bord,
Tant d'horreur humide et de mort
Que l'on frémit, pendant que les pas s'en éloignent.
