Nuit tombante

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

Les taureaux, au parfum
        De la mousse,
Arpentent l’herbe rousse,
        Et chacun
Beugle au soleil défunt ;
La rafale qui glousse
        Se trémousse
        Dans l’air brun.

Et le ravin cruel,
        Sourd et chauve,
A l’humidité fauve
        D’un tunnel ;
Et comme un criminel,
Le nuage se sauve,
        Gris et mauve,
        Dans le ciel.

Des saules convulsés
        Et difformes,
Des trous, des rocs énormes,
        Des fossés,
Des vieux chemins gercés,
Des buissons multiformes,
        Et des ormes
        Crevassés,

De l’eau plate qui dort
        Dans la terre,
Noire et plus solitaire
        Qu’un remord :
Un long murmure sort,
Un long murmure austère
        De mystère
        Et de mort.

Au clapotis que font
        Les viornes,
Sous la voûte sans bornes
        Et sans fond,
Tout s’éloigne et se fond ;
L’ombre efface les cornes
        Des bœufs mornes
        Qui s’en vont.

Et l’escargot sans bruit
        Rampe et bave ;
L’obscurité s’aggrave,
        Le vent fuit ;
Et l’oiseau de minuit
Flotte comme une épave
        Dans la cave
        De la nuit.
