À force de songer, je suis au bout du songe ;
Mon pas n’avance plus pour le voyage humain,
Aujourd’hui comme hier, hier comme demain,
Rengaine de tourment, d’horreur et de mensonge !

Il me faut voir sans cesse, où que mon regard plonge,
En tous lieux, se dresser la Peur sur mon chemin ;
Satan fausse mes yeux, l’ennui rouille ma main,
Et l’ombre de la Mort devant moi se prolonge.

Reviens donc, bonne étoile, à mon triste horizon.
Unique espoir d’un fou qui pleure sa raison,
Laisse couler sur moi ta lumière placide ;

Luis encore ! et surtout, cher Astre médecin,
Accours me protéger, si jamais dans mon sein
Serpentait l’éclair rouge et noir du Suicide.
