Le Vieux Haineux

Ce mort qui vient là-bas fut un propriétaire
Qui lui fit dans sa vie autant de mal qu’il put.
Donc, le voilà debout, travail interrompu,
Pour voir son ennemi qu’enfin on porte en terre.

Regardant s’avancer la bière, il rit, se moque,
Et, tous ses vieux griefs fermentés en longueur
Que son clair souvenir haineusement évoque,
Un à un, triomphants, se lèvent dans son cœur.

Mais, pendant qu’il ricane au défunt détesté,
La terre, l’eau, l’azur, les airs et la clarté,
Tout est amour, tendresse, oubli, calme ! Il commence
À subir peu à peu cet entour de clémence ;

Toujours plus la Nature, en son large abandon,
Lui prêche le respect du mort et le pardon,
À la miséricorde enfin son âme s’ouvre,

Et, lorsque le cercueil passe en face de lui,
Il montre en son œil terne une larme qui luit,
Et, coudant le genou, s’incline et se découvre.
