On scrute leur portrait, espérant qu’il en sorte
Un cri qui puisse enfin nous servir de flambeau.
Ah ! si même ils venaient pleurer à notre porte
Lorsque le soir étend ses ailes de corbeau !

Non ! Mieux que le linceul, la bière et le tombeau
Le silence revêt ceux que le temps emporte :
L’âme en fuyant nous laisse un horrible lambeau
Et ne nous connaît plus dès que la chair est morte

Pourtant, que d’appels fous, longs et désespérés,
Nous poussons jour et nuit vers tous nos enterrés !
Quels flots de questions coulent avec nos larmes !

Mais toujours, à travers ses plaintes, ses remords,
Ses prières, ses deuils, ses spleens et ses alarmes,
L’homme attend vainement la réponse des morts.
