Marchand d’habits ! Ta voix de cuivre et de rogomme
Me surprend tout à coup, me hèle en tapinois ;
Et toujours dans mon âme elle pénètre, comme
Un fantôme canaille, ironique et sournois.

Entouré de bouquins, devant mon cher pupitre,
J’ai beau dompter le spleen et l'à-quoi-bon moqueur,
Pour me martyriser ton cri perce ma vitre
Et vient en ricanant se planter dans mon cœur.

Fatalement alors je cours à la fenêtre ;
Mais, cette fois, je sens frissonner tout mon être
En rencontrant ton œil obliquement tourné.

Et nous nous regardons tous les deux, sans rien dire :
Et tu pars satisfait, sachant que ce damné
Va passer la journée entière à te maudire !
