Le Grand-Père

La fille au père Pierre, avec ses airs de sainte,
A si bien surveillé son corps fallacieux
Que sa grossesse a pu mentir à tous les yeux ;
Mais son heure a sonné de n’être plus enceinte.
Dans la grand' chambre on dort comme l’eau dans les trous.
Tout à coup, elle geint, crie et se désespère.
On se lève, on apprend la chose. Le grand-père
Continue à ronfler sous son baldaquin roux.
Mais le bruit à la fin l’éveille, et le voilà
Clamant du lit profond d’où sa maigreur s’arrache :
« Pierr’, quoiq’ya ? – Pèr, ya rin ! – Si ! s’passe un’ chos’ qu’on m’cache ;
Et ma p’tit’ fill’ se plaint, j’ l’entends ben ! quoi qu’elle a ? »
— Elle a qu’elle va faire un champi ! — Le bonhomme
Prend son bâton ferré qu’il brandit en disant :
« Dans not’ famill’ yaura l’déshonneur à présent !
La gueus’ ! vous voyez ben tous qu’i’ faut que j’l’assomme ! »
Et, solennel, tragique, il marche d’un pas lourd
Jusqu’à la pâle enfant... mais, pendant qu’il tempête,
Tendre, il lève et rabat le gourdin sur sa tête,
Bien doux, frôleusement, d’un geste plein d’amour.
« R’commenc’ras-tu ? fait-il, ou là, comme un’ vipère,
J’te coupe en deux ! j’t’écras’ la cervell’ sur ton drap ! »
Elle gémit : « Jamais, grand-père ! »
Alors, le jeune frère égrillard qui ricane,
Glapit : « Oh ! q’si fait ben, grand-père, a r’commenc’ra
Puisqu’elle est chaude comme un’ cane !
