Je rêvais que mon cœur flottait dans le château
Au-dessus d’une coupe étrange et poussiéreuse :
— Pour y saigner, bien sûr ! Car sa plaie est si creuse
Que le temps y retourne encore le couteau !

Eh quoi ? La chose alors était par trop affreuse :
Ni la meule du spleen, ni les coups de marteau
Du malheur, ni l’angoisse aux mâchoires d’étau
Ne pouvaient exprimer sa pourpre douloureuse.

Mon cœur vit ! m’écriai-je, il palpite ; il ressent !
Je perçois son tic-tac, et certes, c’est du sang,
Du sang qui va couler de sa blessure ouverte !

Mais non ! Il était mort, archi-mort, et si mûr,
Qu’une larme de pus nauséabonde et verte
En suinta lentement comme l’eau d’un vieux mur.
