Le Cauchemar d'un ascète

La vipère se tint debout sur ma savate,
Me fascina, fondit sur moi du premier coup,
Et se laissant glisser de ma tête à mon cou,
Me fit une onduleuse et sifflante cravate.

Puis elle déroula ses longs anneaux ; et fou,
Tout mon corps, possédé du monstre à tête plate,
Ressentit au milieu d’une brume écarlate
La froide ubiquité d’un enlacement mou.

Mais voilà que la bête, humectant son œil louche,
Prit des seins, des cheveux, des membres, une bouche,
Et resserra ses nœuds d’un air passionné :

« Oh ! redeviens serpent ! hurlai-je, horrible dame,
« J’aime mieux, si je dois mourir empoisonné,
« Cent morsures d’aspic qu’un seul baiser de femme !
