L'Ami

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)



Il était brun, très pâle, et toujours en grand deuil ;
Ses paroles claquaient avec un bruit de flammes,
Et de courtes lueurs plus froides que des lames
Illuminaient parfois la brume de son œil.

Un même goût pour l’art et pour les sombres drames,
Le même âge, la même angoisse du cercueil,
Un égal infini de tristesse et d’orgueil
Eurent vite enchaîné nos esprits et nos âmes.

À la longue, pourtant, cet être souple et noir
M’inquiéta sans trêve et tellement, qu’un soir,
Je me dis en moi-même : « Oh ! si c’était le diable ! »

— « Alors, devina-t-il, vous me préférez Dieu ?
« Soit ! je m’en vais, mon cher, mais pour cadeau d’adieu,
« Je vous laisse la Peur, la Peur irrémédiable !
