La Torture

Mon crâne est un fourneau d’où la flamme déborde :
Martyre opiniâtre et lent comme un remords !
Et je sens dans mes os l’épouvantable horde
Des névroses de feu qui galopent sans mors.

Comme un vaisseau brisé, sans espoir qu’il aborde,
Mon cœur va s’enfonçant dans le gouffre des morts,
Loin du passé qui raille et que le regret borde ;
Et je grince en serrant mes deux poings que je mords !

Je prends un pistolet. Horreur ! ma main le lâche,
Et la peur du néant rend mon âme si lâche,
Que pour me sentir vivre, ― oh ! l’immortalité !

Je me livre en pâture aux ventouses des filles !
Mais, raffinant alors sa tortuosité,
La Fièvre tourne en moi ses plus creusantes vrilles.
