Il fait un de ces temps où la sueur vous trempe,
      Où l’on est de plomb pour marcher,
      Gorge sèche et feu dans les tempes.
      Sur le haut d’un petit rocher
      Un grand chat noir se tient juché,
Tandis que juste au bas une vipère rampe.

      D’où vient ce chat lisse et narquois
Qui n’a pas du tout l’air de vivre dans les bois ?
      Pourquoi, si tard, cette vipère
      N’est-elle pas dans son repaire ?

      L’une, par sa langue fourchue,
      L’autre, par le vert de ses yeux,
      Illuminent, mystérieux,
      Leur coin de lumière déchue.

      Le silence plein de féerie
      Parfois est coupé seulement
      D’un sarcastique sifflement,
      D’une amère miaulerie.

      Et, par ce soleil au déclin,
      Le reptile et le beau félin
      Sont d’une horreur inoubliable.
      Il semble qu’en ce lieu discret
      Sous deux formes vous apparaît
      La personne même du diable !
