Or, ce fut par un soir plein d’un funèbre charme,
Qu’après avoir suivi des chemins hasardeux
Ils s’assirent enfin dans un vallon hideux
maint reptile errant commençait son vacarme.

Et tandis que l’orfraie avec son cri d’alarme
Clapotait lourdement dans un vol anxieux,
Sous la compassion sidérale des cieux
Ils gémirent longtemps sans verser une larme[.]

Tout à coup, le buisson les vit avec stupeur
Unir dans un baiser leurs lèvres violettes
Ricanant à la fois de tendresse et de peur.

Et puis, les deux amants joignirent leurs squelettes,
Crispèrent leur étreinte en ne faisant plus qu’un
Et moururent ensemble au bord du fossé brun.
