Ma chambre est pareille à mon âme,
Comme la mort l’est au sommeil :
Au fond de l’âtre, pas de flamme !
À la vitre, pas de soleil !

Les murailles sont recouvertes
D’un lamentable papier gris
Où l’ombre des persiennes vertes
Met des taches de vert-de-gris.

Au-dessus de mon chevet sombre
Pend un Christ à l’air ingénu,
Qui semble s’enfoncer dans l’ombre
Pour ne pas se montrer si nu.

Compagnon de ma destinée,
Un crâne brisé, lisse et roux,
Du haut de l’humble cheminée
Me regarde avec ses deux trous.

Des rideaux lourds et très antiques
Se crispent sur le lit profond ;
De longs insectes fantastiques
Dansent et rampent au plafond.

Quand l’heure sonne à ma pendule,
Elle fait un bruit alarmant ;
Chaque vibration ondule
Et se prolonge étrangement.

L’ange de mes amours funèbres,
Porte toujours un domino,
Et chaque nuit, dans les ténèbres,
Va sangloter au piano.

Meubles, tableaux, fleurs, livres même,
Tout sent l’enfer et le poison,
Et, comme un drap, l’horreur qui m’aime
Enveloppe cette prison.

Triste chambre où l’ennui qui raille
Veille à mes côtés nuit et jour,
J’écris ces vers sur ta muraille,
Et je bénis ton noir séjour ;

Car le torrent aime le gouffre,
Et le hibou, l’obscurité ;
Car tu plais à mon cœur qui souffre
Par ton affreuse identité !
