La Cendre

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

De la sorte — parlant par la voix du Curé
      La cendre de l’âtre interpelle
La chambrière antique à l’air dur et madré
Qui vient la prendre avec sa pelle :

      « Épargne-moi donc, bonne vieille !
Ne va pas encore me noyer,
      Laisse-moi dans ce grand foyer
      Où si doucement je sommeille.

      Tu ne verras pas rougeoyer
      Toujours la lumière vermeille.
      En terre obscure, à poudroyer,
Un jour, tu seras ma pareille.

      Voici que ton âge succombe ;
Nous allons être sœurs ainsi :
      Moi, je serai poussière ici,
Et toi, poussière dans la tombe. »

La vieille qui croit plus encor
      À l’existence qu’à la mort,
Lui répond, tremblante et poussive :

« Poussière et cend’ ? tant q’tu voudras
Quand je n’blanchirai plus mes draps...
En attendant, fais ma lessive !
