Ballade du vieux baudet

En automne, à cette heure où le soir triomphant
Inonde à flots muets la campagne amaigrie,
Rien ne m’amusait plus, lorsque j’étais enfant,
Que d’aller chercher l’âne au fond d’une prairie
Et de le ramener jusqu’à son écurie.
En vain le vieux baudet sentait ses dents jaunir,
Ses sabots s’écailler, sa peau se racornir :
À ma vue il songeait aux galops de la veille,
Et parmi les chardons commençant à brunir
Il se mettait à braire et redressait l’oreille.

Alors je l’enfourchais et ma blouse en bouffant
Claquait comme un drapeau dans la bise en furie
Qui, par les chemins creux, tantôt m’ébouriffant,
Tantôt me suffoquant sous la nue assombrie,
Déchaînait contre moi toute sa soufflerie.
Quel train ! Parfois ayant grand’ peine à me tenir,
J’aurais voulu descendre ou pouvoir aplanir
Ses reins coupants et d’une âpreté sans pareille ;
Mais lui, fier d’un jarret qui semblait rajeunir,
Il se mettait à braire et redressait l’oreille.

Nous allions ventre à terre, et l’églantier griffant,
Les ajoncs, les genêts, la hutte rabougrie,
Les mètres de cailloux, le chêne qui se fend,
La ruine, le roc, la barrière pourrie
Passaient et s’enfuyaient comme une songerie.
Et puis nous approchions : plus qu’un trot à fournir !
Dans l’ombre où tout venait se confondre et s’unir,
L’âne flairait l’étable avec son mur à treille,
Et sachant que sa course allait bientôt finir,
Il se mettait à braire et redressait l’oreille.
