'Bergers, vous dont ici la chèvre vagabonde,
La brebis se traînant sous sa laine féconde,
Au dos de la colline accompagnent les pas,
A la jeune Mnaïs rendez, rendez, hélas!
Par Cérès, par sa fille et la Terre sacrée,
Une grâce légère, autant que désirée.
Ah! près de vous, jadis, elle avait son berceau,
Et sa vingtième année a trouvé le tombeau.
Que vos agneaux du moins viennent près de ma cendre
Me bêler les accents de leur voix douce et tendre,
Et paître au pied d'un roc où d'un son enchanteur
La flûte parlera sous les doigts du pasteur.
Qu'au retour du printemps, dépouillant la prairie,
Des dons du villageois ma tombe soit fleurie;
Puis d'une brebis mère et docile à sa main
En un vase d'argile il pressera le sein;
Et sera chaque jour d'un lait pur arrosée
La pierre en ce tombeau sur mes mânes posée.
Morts et vivants, il est encor pour nous unir
Un commerce d'amour et de doux souvenir.'

Andre Marie de Chenier

André Marie Chénier was a French poet of Greek and Franco-Levantine origin, associated with the events of the French Revolution of which he was a victim. His sensual, emotive poetry marks him as one of the precursors of the Romantic movement. His career was brought to an abrupt end when he was guillotined for supposed "crimes against the state", just three days before the end of the Reign of Terror. Chénier's life has been the subject of Umberto Giordano's opera Andrea Chénier and other works of art. more…
