Allons chanter, assis dans les saintes forêts,
Sous ce chêne orgueilleux, favori de Cérès,
Qui loin autour de lui porte un immense ombrage,
Tu vois, de tous côtés pendant à son feuillage,
Couronnes et bandeaux et bouquets entassés,
Doux monuments des voeux par Cérès exaucés.

A son ombre souvent les nymphes bocagères
Viennent former les pas de leurs danses légères;
Pour mesurer ses flancs et leur vaste contour,
Leurs mains s'entrelaçant serpentent à l'entour:
Et, les bras étendus, vingt Dryades à peine
Pressent ce tronc noueux et dont Cérès est vaine.

Andre Marie de Chenier

André Marie Chénier was a French poet of Greek and Franco-Levantine origin, associated with the events of the French Revolution of which he was a victim. His sensual, emotive poetry marks him as one of the precursors of the Romantic movement. His career was brought to an abrupt end when he was guillotined for supposed "crimes against the state", just three days before the end of the Reign of Terror.
