Qui est ami du coeur est ami de la bourse,
Ce dira quelque honnête et hardi demandeur,
Qui de l'argent d'autrui libéral dépendeur
Lui-même à l'hôpital s'en va toute la course.

Mais songe là-dessus qu'il n'est si vive source
Qu'on ne puisse épuiser, ni si riche prêteur
Qui ne puisse à la fin devenir emprunteur,
Ayant affaire à gens qui n'ont point de ressource.

Gordes, si tu veux vivre heureusement romain,
Sois large de faveur, mais garde que ta main
Ne soit à tous venants trop largement ouverte.

Par l'un on peut gagner même son ennemi,
Par l'autre bien souvent on perd un bon ami,
Et quand on perd l'argent, c'est une double perte.
