Quand ce brave séjour, honneur du nom Latin,
Qui borna sa grandeur d'Afrique et de la Bise,
De ce peuple qui tient les bords de la Tamise,
Et de celui qui voit éclore le matin,

Anima contre soi d'un courage mutin
Ses propres nourrissons, sa dépouille conquise,
Qu'il avait par tant d'ans sur tout le monde acquise,
Devint soudainement du monde le butin :

Ainsi quand du grand Tout la fuite retournée,
Ou trente-six mille ans ont sa course bornée,
Rompra des éléments le naturel accord,

Les semences qui sont mères de toutes choses
Retourneront encore à leur premier discord,
Au ventre du Chaos éternellement closes.
