Ayant tant de malheurs gémi profondément,
Je vis une cité quasi semblable à celle
Que vit le messager de la bonne nouvelle,
Mais bâti sur le sable était son fondement.

Il semblait que son chef touchât au firmament,
Et sa forme n'était moins superbe que belle :
Digne, s'il en fut onc, digne d'être immortelle,
Si rien dessous le ciel se fondait fermement.

J'étais émerveillé de voir si bel ouvrage,
Quand du côté du nord vint le cruel orage,
Qui soufflant la fureur de son coeur dépité

Sur tout ce qui s'oppose encontre sa venue,
Renversa sur-le-champ, d'une poudreuse nue,
Les faibles fondements de la grande cité.
