I’m Sorry

What was it that I meant to say
Before you cried and turned away
My heart called out to beg you “stay!”
But foolish pride got in my way
How cleverly each word was said
I trapped myself in my own web
Each little barb to grip and tear
To hurt you more than you could bear
Those words that made you turn and flee
Returned to shame and humble me
Could I but have them back again
I would not say them now, as then
